A few days ago, we saw that you can get the latest iPhone 12 Mini or other free phones when you switch to the metro by T-Mobile. If you decided to switch with your own phone, the limited-time offer also includes a trial of the $50 unlimited plan for only $5 on the first month. Quick question, though, do similar deals exist for the existing customers? If not, how much does it cost to upgrade your phone at MetroPCS with your old account?

Well, first of all, Metro by T-Mobile is the new name of the MetroPCS. However, we prefer to use the two interchangeably for the sake of the old customers (who know MetroPCS) and New customers (who know Metro by T-Mobile).

Anyway, back to the topic, Metro does have deals for existing customers like you as well. Indeed, the deals aren’t as many as for those new customers coming from another carrier but can still suffice like now you want to upgrade.

What are the best MetroPCS phone deals for existing customers in 2022?

As of September 2021, MetroPCS still has an ongoing limited-time offer when you switch to them with an eligible number. However, some of these deals are available to new customers and old subscribers as well. What’s best, the MetroPCS offers do include several 5G-capable devices, unlike the free phone when you switch to Cricket deals that only offer 4G LTE devices.

How Do You Know When You Can Upgrade Your Phone

Before all else, MetroPCS is a no-contract mobile virtual network operator. In a nutshell, that means you (as a customer) can walk away anytime you want and won’t need to pay the early termination fees. However, you’ll still need to pay their month-to-month cell phone plans to continue making callings and browsing the internet.

Even though you have the freedom to walk out at any time, the Metro no-contract policy has its downsides as well. The first one is that you cannot lease a cell phone no matter the price tag. You have to pay upfront and in full.

Secondly, these no-contract phone carriersrarely give discounts when you want to upgrade your device. The MetroPCS is a perfect example, though there’s an exemption like right now when they have limited-term offers. But then, how do you know when you can upgrade your phone?

The Difference with Contract/ No-Contract Cell Phone Carriers

Well, in contract-based cell phone carriers like T-Mobile and Verizon and AT&T, not all customers can upgrade their device at any time. It depends on whether you currently have a device under a term contract, paid off 100%, or brought your own.

If you purchased your current phone on a contract (installment plan), you have to have paid off 50-80% to be eligible for an upgrade. However, you’re eligible to upgrade any time if you brought your own phone or have already paid off 100% of the lease amount.

Therefore, you should be able to upgrade your phone at MetroPCS anytime since the provider only trades at full retail price. But again, you can’t just remove your SIM card from your old device and expect it to immediately start making calls. You need to transfer service from the old MetroPCS phone, which, of course, is free when you do it yourself. Alternatively, you can contact customer care or visit the nearest local MetroPCS dealer to help you ($20+ fees apply).

It’s worth noting that T-Mobile, carrier hosting MetroPCS, is planning to retire its 3G, frequency bands soon. So, you might want to upgrade to a 4G LTE cell phone sooner if you want to continue getting service.

How Much Does It Cost To Upgrade Your Phone At MetroPCS

As we’ve just mentioned, MetroPCS and most other no-contract phone carriers don’t have the best upgrade kits. Even if it’s migrating to 5G, you have to either purchase a compatible device at full retail price or try any of the available phones deals.

Now, the free phone deals with MetroPCS are mostly available to the new customers who port in an existing number. Therefore, we can say one of the ways to upgrade your phone at MetroPCS is by porting an eligible phone number. And the fact you’ll get the device for free makes it an even better choice.

The second way you can qualify for these MetroPCS phone deals is when you add a new line to your account. In some of the promos, you can add the line to any existing Metro account. But others require that you must not be on Metro service “in the past 180 days” (approximately 6 months) if you want to be eligible. In other words, your phone account must be less than180 days old to qualify for the MetroPCS add line get a line program.

Note, the free phone deals when you port-in or add a new line to MetroPCS are available in-store only. Worst of all, it’s not any store but only the participating Metro dealers. So, you have to check from your desired phone the nearest authorized store that has it.
